Genetica is a leading expert in bio-based industrial wastewater treatment, and has growing operations in the fast-growing areas of biogas generation and bio-based crop protection.

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Chapecó, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, Genetica develops, manufactures, and sells biological solutions for industrial wastewater treatment, biogas generation, and bio-based crop protection (utilizing advanced microbials to defend against pests, diseases and environmental stressors). Over two decades, the company has built a pioneering vertically integrated platform that spans microorganism R&D, proprietary formulation, and in-house manufacturing. Its proprietary microbial library and treatment protocols underpin high-performance products and a hands-on technical service model focused on solving customers’ environmental challenges.

Genetica serves businesses in many areas, including the agribusiness, food and beverage, collagen and pharmaceuticals sectors. Its biological solutions provide a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to conventional chemical inputs in wastewater treatment. The company provides further improvements with tailored treatment protocols based on laboratory analysis of each customer’s effluent. Solutions lower treatment costs, reduce waste and limit the amount of chemicals entering the water cycle, offering environmental benefits through cleaner industrial effluents and fewer acute pollution events downstream.

Water quality is a core focus of ARCHIMED’s Environmental Health strategy, and wastewater treatment is a priority area. Demand for improved water quality is increasing as industrial capacity expands and environmental standards become more stringent. With high technical and regulatory barriers to entry and the rapid adoption of biological solutions in Brazil, Genetica is well positioned at the forefront of the market. ARCHIMED identified the company following an extensive review of the biological water-treatment market and sourced the investment opportunity directly.

Working closely with management, ARCHIMED will deploy its MedValue template – ARCHIMED’s levers for accelerating the growth of partnering companies through product range extension, innovation, broader licensing, and acquisitions. ARCHIMED’s support will focus on strengthening the commercial organization and key-account coverage, while expanding Genetica’s solutions into new industrial segments.

“Over the past 20 years, we have built Genetica into a reference point for biological wastewater treatment in Brazil. ARCHIMED brings the operational support, international network, and resources to scale the platform,” says Ivan Sganderla, Genetica co-founder.  “We will keep the foundations that built our company – technical excellence and agility in solving customer challenges – while increasing investment in R&D and expanding our presence in Brazil and internationally,” says Anderson Bernardi, co-founder of Genetica.

“Few companies in environmental biotechnology combine Genetica’s capabilities, including proprietary microbial know-how, fully in-house manufacturing, and a service model refined during two decades inside customers’ treatment plants”

Thibaut Mongon, Partner at ARCHIMED

“Few companies in environmental biotechnology combine Genetica’s capabilities, including proprietary microbial know-how, fully in-house manufacturing, and a service model refined during two decades inside customers’ treatment plants,” says Thibaut Mongon, Partner at ARCHIMED. “As industrial customers accelerate their shift from chemical to biological solutions, Genetica is positioned to lead,” says Antoine Faguer, Partner at ARCHIMED.

ARCHIMED acquired its majority stake in Genetica through the MED III fund, alongside Rise Investment, a Brazilian impact investment fund, as minority co-investor. Genetica is ARCHIMED’s first stand-alone investment in Brazil and the tenth investment of MED III, which closed on €650 million in 2021. All ARCHIMED’s deployed buyout funds from 2019, 2021, and 2022 vintages are top-quartile performers for their respective vintage years (Preqin 2026).
